Birmingham women who received new lingerie for Christmas are now being urged to do their bit for a good cause as part of an Olympic-inspired challenge run by the city council.
Last year the council launched a network of bra recycling banks across the city, similar in design to those used to collect clothing and other items.
So in a time known for giving and not just receiving, those who were lucky enough to receive such garments as Christmas gifts can give to a good cause by getting rid of unwanted or old items at one of the council-supported sites.
Since the scheme launched last year, 1,592kg of the garments have been collected, and recycled to raise money for Breast Friends, a Sutton Coldfield-based charity that supports women with breast cancer.
The collection is sold by weight and BCR Global Textiles, a local recycling firm, then re-sells the garments to traders in developing countries, giving women items they may otherwise not have access to.
For every kg of bras collected, Breast Friends gets £1 – meaning they have received £1,592 thanks to the responsible recycling of Birmingham’s citizens.
And as part of the launch a goal was set to collect enough recycled bras to cover the distance of the marathon course (26 miles and 385 yards) if laid end-to-end by the time the 2012 Olympics begin.
By the end of October, 31,840 bras have been recycled – stretching 19 miles, equivalent to the distance from the Council House to West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley.
The UK’s average bra size is 36 inches (one yard). There are 1,760 yards in a mile, and the Olympic-themed challenge means 46,145 bras will ultimately need to be donated to achieve the goal.
