Man Critical After Wrong-Way A3 Crash

Police are investigating a crash on the southbound carriageway of the A3 at Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

It happened shortly before 11pm on August the 18th when a beige Volkswagen Bora, driven by a 85-year-old man, was seen travelling the wrong way along the carriageway.

The Bora collided with a black Saab Vector, driven by a 42-year-old man from Horndean and a silver Ford Fiesta, driven by a 48-year-old woman from Southbourne.

The 85-year-old man sustained life threatening injuries and was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Saab sustained injuries to his chest and shoulders. A 41-year-old woman passenger from Horndean, suffered neck and back pain.

A 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl, also from Horndean, were shaken but uninjured.

The driver of the Fiesta suffered whiplash. A 23-year-old woman passenger, from Southbourne, sustained neck and back injuries. A 22-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy, also from Southbourne, were uninjured.

All were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital.

The road was closed for almost six hours while the vehicle were recovered and collision investigators examined the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone who saw the Volkswagen Bora just prior to it, to contact Sgt Mark Weller at Fratton Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Holloway.
