Film fans in and around Bridgwater are being invited to a cinema with a difference.

The Bridgwater Way - a project encouraging cycling and walking as sustainable alternatives to the car - is organising a free, open air pedal-powered “Cycle cinema” event, and the public are now being urged to vote for which family blockbuster they want to see.

The cycle cinema will take place at St Matthew's Field in Bridgwater on Friday, 6 September, starting at 7.30pm. People can take it in turns to pedal the 12 bicycles needed to power the 8 by 12-foot screen, or simply sit back and enjoy the show. Film goers will also have the chance to learn more about The Bridgwater Way project and the work it is doing in the town.

There are three films to choose from - Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. and Toy Story. The public can vote now for what they want to see by logging on to the Bridgwater Way website. The film with the most votes will be announced on Tuesday 27 August.

Councillor David Hall, Deputy Leader of Somerset County Council said:

This will be a fun evening to enjoy a great family film and learn all about The Bridgwater Way. As the town grows and develops we have to think about how people can get around quickly, sustainably and cheaply. This project will provide safe and affordable ways to get to work and school, tackle congestion as well as help keep people fit and healthy.”

The Bridgwater Way, funded by the Department for Transport, aims to transform travel in the town by making cycling and walking for work, school and fun, easier and safer. It includes 6.5miles of new or improved cycle paths and walking routes, and a host of activities to encourage sustainable transport and ease congestion. The project is being delivered through a partnership of Somerset County Council, Sustrans and Sedgemoor District Council.

The cycle cinema screening will be completely free and attendees will also get the chance to enter a free prize draw to win a brand new bike.
