Woman and dog die in Carmarthenshire crash on way home from vet

A woman and her dog died in a crash on the way home from the vet, police have confirmed.

Emily Thornton-Sandy and her dog Scout died after a collision on the A48 between Cross Hands and Pont Abraham in Carmarthenshire on 5 November.

The 30-year-old from Pontarddulais was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where she later died on 11 November.

Mrs Thornton-Sandy's husband said in a statement her death felt "unreal" and it had "left a hole in [the family's] lives which can never be filled".

He said his wife was "kind, compassionate, and had so much more to give".

"I wake up every morning in disbelief at the fact that I will never see her smile again," he added.

"Emily deserved a long and happy life, and the thought of what happened to her that day brings the greatest pain to all those who love her."

He also paid tribute to Scout as "the most gentle, affectionate dog you could ever meet" who "brought great happiness to both me and Emily".

He thanked the emergency services and medical staff for the help they provided to Emily and Scout.

Mrs Thornton-Sandy's parents said the loss of their only child was "devastating".

"Not only have we lost our baby girl, but we mourn the loss of the grandchildren that we will never have," they added.

They said their daughter had "always been [their] pride and joy" and she "achieved so much during her short life".

They added: "She will never be forgotten."

Her employer, Thompsons Solicitors, described her as "a remarkable young lawyer" and said the firm was "united in mourning."

Clare Mellor, the firm's chief executive, said her work "gave hope to those facing devastating situations".

"Emily's legacy will live on in the lives she touched and the justice she pursued," she added.
