Search for boy who went missing after swimming with friends in the Mersey stood down

A search for a 14-year-old boy who went missing after swimming with friends in the River Mersey has been stood down.

Police said he became separated from the group near the radar tower off Crosby Beach, Waterloo, and hasn't been seen since.

Emergency services were called just after 7pm on Sunday and a cordon was put in place on the beach.

Local media said there were multiple ambulances and fire engines near the scene, with a coastguard helicopter overhead.

"We are asking people to avoid the area at this time, whilst the emergency services, including the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, continue searching for the missing boy," Merseyside Police said on Sunday.

HM Coastguard confirmed the search had been stood down as of 10am on Monday, pending further information.
