Colchester Castle - Where history comes alive!
Come and spend a day out at Colchester Castle and discover it's 2,000 years of history. In the museum new displays will take you on a fascinating journey from the birth of the town in the Iron Age to the Siege of Colchester in 1648 during the English Civil War - tales of warriors, gladiators, builders, merchants and family life.
One of England’s most important heritage sites, it is also the largest Norman Keep in Europe. In 1076 William the Conqueror ordered it to be built on the foundations the Romans had constructed 1,000 years earlier for the Temple of Claudius.
Step back in time to a land of conflict and uprising where things were quite different from today. No mobile phones, iPad’s or Xbox, but instead wax writing tablets, manuscripts and mysterious board games – all of which are on display.
Get closer to history and have a go at riding a chariot, excavating an ancient iron-age grave or dressing up as a Roman. If you are brave enough take a tour through the eerie Roman vaults; hear about Queen Boudica’s rebellion and her massacre of the Romans on that very spot.
Have a great day out at Colchester Castle
