Sandy: Man Killed After Parking Row

A man from Sandy, near St Neots, has died following an argument about a disabled parking space in a supermarket car park, according to Police.

A 65 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the incident at an Asda supermarket car park in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, yesterday (Saturday).

The victim, a 64 year old, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he died this afternoon (Sunday), a spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said.

The 65 year old man arrested has been released on bail until later this month.

DCI Tim Redfearn from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation, and said: "We are now treating this man’s death as manslaughter, and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the altercation take place between these two men at around 3pmon Saturday 3rd August in the Asda car park to contact us.

The men were waiting in the disabled parking area at the time and got into a disagreement about parking.

We know they became involved in a disagreement which resulted in one man punching the other knocking him to the ground.

It would seem an argument over nothing has led to tragic and devastating consequences for both men and their families.

I know the supermarket car park would have been very busy on a Saturday afternoon so if you were there at the relevant time please contact the police in confidence."

A 65 year old man left the supermarket immediately afterwards but was arrested at his home address nearby a short time later and taken to Greyfriars Police Station in Bedford where he is being questioned.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact Bedfordshire Police on 101, or text information to 07786 200011.

Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Update - 5:30pm Monday 5 August:

The family of a 64-year-old man who was killed in a row over a disabled parking space said today they are "devastated'' by his death.

Brian Holmes from Sandy in Bedfordshire died in hospital yesterday (Sunday) after the disagreement in an Asda supermarket car park in Biggleswade on Saturday.

In a statement released through Bedfordshire Police, his family said: "The family are devastated by the loss of Brian in such shocking circumstances.

A wife has lost her husband, best friend and carer all in one go.

Brian was a family man who adored his grandchildren and family, and had only this week been given the all-clear following treatment for cancer.

Brian and his wife were only just starting to make plans for the future that they only dared to dream of."
